3 ways to wear glitter: festival season
So of course festival season is well and truly upon us (I can literally feel the glitter that’s going to soak through everyone's veins in these next few months). I absolutely adore concerts and festivals, honestly, it’s not an exaggeration when I say that arenas and festivals are like my third home (after my actual house and the makeup aisle). I look forward to the summer concerts and festivals all year, I obviously love the artists that you get to see live and the whole experience but adding to that, I also love that (I’m pretty sure) a festival is the only socially acceptable circumstance where you can dye your hair crazy colours, add glitter to everything and anything, wear wellies with a complete summer outfit and stand in a field and shout to your hearts content, and I love it.
In the past when I have gone to festivals I have worn glitter in quite a few ways, ranging from ‘subtle’ glitter looks (well as subtle as glitter can be) to all-out festival makeup. So I just thought I would write this post today in case you either are going to a festival and want some inspiration, or are struggling with the idea of going all out with the glitter if it’s your first festival (if that is the case however my advice would be the more glitter the better, chances are you will probably end up in a really long queue and paying three times the price to get glitzed up once your there anyway). I will also add my recommendations of glitter for each look.
*Just a side note, any pictures of eye looks are taken off google for this post because I haven't taken pictures of any I have created personally. So all credit goes to the creators of these looks. I am just including them to help me explain the looks I am talking about creating.*
First way: glitter liner
So this first way to incorporate glitter into a makeup look is possibly one of the most subtle ways but still gives a really glittery effect and also adds an extra something to your makeup look. This is also perfect for if you are running late to a festival or are staying in a tent and just want to get out and go. Glitter liner is really simple to do but looks soooo pretty. I personally wore this for the first day of V festival last year and adored the way it looked, I also often do this on nights out.
There is two styles of glitter liner; the first being creating an outline of eyeliner with a liquid eyeliner as normal, but instead of filling in the liner, add glitter glue and stick glitter there instead, I hope that makes sense, but if not there will be pictures below.
The second way, is to split your eyeliner into two layers. To do this you want to start off by creating your wings as normal, and then use either a glitter liquid eyeliner or a loose glitter and glitter glue and create another wing right on top of the first one. I think this looks really pretty while also looking as though you applied so much effort into your makeup.

In terms of the type of glitter I personally recommend for this look, I actually have a few different ones that all work and look equally good. It is just basically down to preference or what you already have in your collection (saving some money is always a postive so).
I think the obivous product to use for this is a glitter eyeliner, I find this is the easiest option however it does depend on the intenstiy of the glitter you want because I have found that although glitter eyeliners look really pretty and neat they tend to leave a more subtle finish rather than a stand out glitter. I actually found a really pigmented silver glitter liner from primark a while back, its a shimmery silver and does look really pretty and it was £3.50 so i would definitely check them out if they are still in stores. If that plan fails and you cant find them, I believe that Rimmel have actually recently realised glitter liners called the 'wonder swipe eyeliner' and I believe there are a couple of shades and although I havent actually tried them they look really good from what I hhaveeen.
If you want a really glittery liner and glitter eyeliner just doesnt do it for you and you want to be adventurous, loose glitter is a really good alternative. Although this approach is a lot more tricky and takes longer to perfect and clean up, the finished result is worht it... and thats all that matters right? i mean unless your staying at a festival in a tent in the rain, and then I totaly understand you not caring anymore. I persoanlly perferred loose glittter for concerts and festivals and stick to glitter liner more for nights out.
To use lose glitter you will need obivously a glitter of your choice (i really like the Makeup Revoluton glitter bombs- £4, the NYX glitters- £6 and the Barry M glitters- £4.59, however, any glitter will work) and then you will need something to stick the glitter on with. Now, this is a vital part of the look . becasue this determines how long the glitter will last, and there is absolutly nothing worse than spending all that time perfecting your liner for it to come off as soon as you arrive at the festival. I mean festivals are for the whole day so your glitter should be too right? Now I know NYX do a 'glitter primer' which is essentially a glitter glue for £8 which I have heard great things about, however I actually love to use my eyelash glue, now before I fully reccomend this, I am actually not sure if this can be used on your eyelids so you might want to look that up first, however I figured if you can use it on your lashes close to your eye what harm could it do. To do this I use a small angled liner brush and apple the glue wherever I want the glitter and just apply the glitter on top and let it dry and your good to go. The eyelash glue I use is the DUO eylash glue which is £8.95 on beauty bay, however Primark actually reatil it for £5 I believe...thank god for primark, actual life savers!!
Second way: full glitter eye look
The second glitter look I love wearing is full glitter lid. This is my go-to glitter look for any occasion but is especially perfect for festivals or even summer nights out. One of the main things I love about this look is that there isn’t one specific way to do it, so you can tailor it to what you feel comfortable wearing or to your particular eye shape, for example, some people like a rounded eye look, and some people prefer to wing there shadows out. Another positive is, do you know sometimes when you create an eye look and it just doesn’t look complete without a dramatic winged liner... well this doesn’t need that at all, however, if your anything like me and love winged liner then it can also look amazing with it. This look is very adaptable to the occasion you are attending while also being very tailored to your partcicular preferences.
There are two parictulare eye looks I create with a full glitter lid, the first being a cut crease. To do this you want to apply your shadows to the crease starting with a transition shade and then gradually add darker colours into the outer corners, with the main focus being on blending them together smoothly (no one wants shadows that look too harsh). When you are happy and satisfied with your shadows (it doesn’t matter if they are messy at this point, it’s easily cleaned and sharpened up), you want to take a concealer on a small flat brush and pop a dot of it on your lid (and here’s a tip) if you look up the concealer will then create a line which you can then use to create a perfect cut crease for your eye. When you are happy with the shape of the concealer, you want to set it with a white or translucent powder and go back in with the shadows you used to darken your crease, again to avoid a harsh lines. Now onto the main event... the glitter. You can again, like above, use any glitter you prefer (loose pigments or glitter shadows) and you want to apply this to where you previously applied that concealer. In terms of the glitter I reccomend I will discuss that a little bit further on in this post just after I explain the next ‘full glitter look’ because the glitter reccomendations are similar for the two looks, so read on for that.
Now the second look is a spotlight eye, which i think looks so pretty its unreal. To do this you want to agian start to blend your transition colours through your crease, making sure it's reaching completely from your inner corner to outer corner (that is essential). after doing this you want to start to add darker colours just to the outer and inner corner of the eye and going back in with the transition colours to blend it into the middle of the crease and keep doing this with darker colours until everything is blended and both corners of the eye are the darkest points. When you are happy with your matte colours you then again want to take a concealer on a flat top brush and pat this on the inner part of your eyelid, right from your lash line up to the crease, and set it with concealer when you are happy with the shape. The last step is then to add the glitter.
Now my recommendations for these looks would be glitter pigments, glitter liquid eyeshadows or again loose glitters.
Now for loose pigments,I have an absolute bargain for you here, if I was going torecommendd any pigments it would defintiely be the 'IMAGIC loose pigments' from the site Ali Express. These pigments are so pigmented and pretty and they are £1.91 each... yes you did read that right. The only downside to these is the order time. Because the website is based in China the products you order do take some time to arrive, however for that price, I honestlydon'tt even care. The link to these glitters is: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/IMAGIC-New-Arrival-Glitter-Eyeshadow-Metallic-Loose-Powder-Waterproof-Shimmer-Pigments-Colors-Eye-Shadow-Makeup/32838785328.html?spm=a2g0s.9042311.0.0.275a4c4d3NvVUt
In terms of the easiest option, i would definitely recommend the Stila 'Glitter and glow liquid eyeshadows' these eyeshdaows are up there with my favourite ever eyeshadows, I love them. There is honestly not one thing I can fault about them, they are really pigmented, they last on the eyes and the applicator is really simple and easy to use. They also give off the affect of glitter rather than shimmer which I love. These are £23 but you actually get so much product, so the price actually isnt too bad in my opinion.
And of course, there is always the option of using actual glitter, see above for application tips and glitter reccomendations :)

Third way: face glitter
Now the two previous glitter application ideas, where makeup related, in terms of encoprarating glitter into a makeup look, however, if you are seriously extra and want to make glitter your makeup look this next one is for you. If you are absolutly anything like me and love to go all out at music festivals and appreciate the fact that you can wear whatever amount of glitter your heart desires and it be socially acceptble face glitter is proably the way forward. Do you know when you either go to festivals or see them on the TV and people have glitter right up there face or glitter highlighter or even glitter beards, I always wondered how even in the rain it didnt fall off (and i wasnt going to even risk apllying that much eyelash glue to my fave, even I understand that would be a disaster), however my questions were very qucikly answered when I went to V Festival 2 years ago, queued up for like an hour to get my face glittered and was done in like 3 minutes, for them to put vaseline, yes vaseline on my face and stick the glitter to it. Now as soon as they done this I thought to myself, no... there isabsolutelyy no chance that is staying on my face for more than like 1 hour, however I was so shocked that even like 7 hours later, after rain (and let me tell you the rain was horrendous) the glitter was still perfectly in place.
This also works with face gems as well as glitter, so if your aim is to look like a disco ball or be seen from the moon (sounds amazing to me) vaseline is the way forward... honestly believe me.
For this particular look inspiration, I dont want to add a specific picture because face glitter can be interpreted in many different ways, and its genuinly a look that you can be as creative as you want. However, I am going to include an instagram account, that if you are from the UK you probably are already well aware off in terms of glitter makeup and festival makeup, The Gypsy shrine. Not only do they absolutly slay festival makeup looks they also sell it, so definitely go and check them out for festival inspiration or to buy your face gems.
